Buying anime figures is a process..

Check out my other blog posts where I go deeper into Hobby-Genki here, here and here.

Hobby-Genki Highlights

  • A trustworthy anime figure website from Osaka, Japan
  • MFC partners for another layer of trust
  • Fast and slow shipping options at competitive rates
  • Utilizes a “Private Warehouse” where you can combine or separate orders within 60 days
  • “Pay Later” option
  • Gets “Aniplex” exclusive figures, Kotobukiya ARTFX-J bonuses & other Bandai Exclusives

Concerns?

  • The currency you pick at the time of purchase is what you are stuck paying with
  • Shipping options are not automated for selection after entering “Private Warehouse.” You must ask for shipping quotes.

This was one of the first orders that made me realize that when you make an order, you are locked into the currency price at that moment. If you order in Yen, you are stuck in Yen. If you order in USD, you are stuck in USD at that exchange rate price at the time of the order. You do not have the leeway to adjust which currency you prefer that benefits you the best. You will have to reorder and cancel your previous order if you want to switch currencies. That can be an issue if preorders are sold out.

Recent Concerns

Hobby-Genki is a fairly trustworthy business, however, it seems recently they have been slacking on their customer service and orders. One of my recent orders got stuck on “processing” and it took me to email them to ask them what happened for them to get my order to finalize the processing. That was about a month to a month and a half later..

Then, there is the issue with the time it takes to ship the product. This isn’t just specifically a Hobby-Genki issue, but even AmiAmi has been experiencing delays in shipping their product out. So, expect up to a week delay or longer if you paid for faster shipping like FedEx, DHL or EMS.

Shipping Box

  • The figure box came bubble wrapped
  • This box would be similar to AmiAmi’s 120 “size” box

Aniplex / Revolve Box

  • Unsurprisingly, the figure box is similar to the Aniplex 1/8 scale of Kocho and Giyu theme
  • One big difference is the quality of cardboard box that this Uzui figure came with, which is of higher quality

Assembly

  • The figure comes with two different Nichirin chain attachments for the blades, the two blades and two different heads
  • No complications with the assembly

Aesthetics

  • Aesthetics is 10/10 perfect!
  • Design choice is a dynamic action pose that represents Uzui’s role in the Entertainment District Arc well
  • Paint quality is as good as it gets for scale figures
  • Sculpt quality is also as good as it gets for scale figures
  • The only downside is that the design calls for the display of the figure to be on a higher shelf if you want to see Uzui’s face expression

Base

What blows me away the most, is the base! You guys don’t know how many times I make fun of the default rock formations, but this one is different. Honestly, scale figures with rock formations is basically a meme for many scale figures. In this case, I actually don’t mind it. For a 1/8 scale, this base is extremely massive! (In a good way). It’s a lot more dynamic because it utilizes the back part of the base and the front part. (See “Pictures” section below). A majority of the time, it’s just rocks that the character stands on, where it feels like it has no relevance other than to be a replacement for just acrylic bases.

Are there defects?

This might be my most pristine and well put together figure in my collection. Typically, I can nitpick here and there. It can stem from the sculpting of the hair, the painting on the accessories and even the paint on the fingernails. The sword paint quality is perfect, the metallic gold paint looks great and even his finger nails look like he just got a fresh new manicure.

I’m super ecstatic about the quality of this figure!

This is one where you should display him higher up to catch that view of his grinning face with the Nichirin swords. I mean.. I already had a man crush on this character, but this figure is exactly what I would want out of an Uzui figure!

The VERDICT

Out of all of the Uzui scales that has released up to this point, they all binned.. Unfortunately, my favorite hashira isn’t as popular and the demand doesn’t seem to be there. Even FREEing screwed us fans by making their 1/4 scale B-style Uzui a fortune($600+).. Nevertheless, demand and future value aside, this is an EASY buy for Uzui fans if you are considering purchasing this. I promise I’m not as biased you think!

Once again, it’s sad that his figures and his character profile isn’t higher because this figure is the kind of figure of why I started collecting—high quality art for your favorite characters. He’s going to be sticking around in my collection for a long, long time.
