Well after some thought and listening to other comments on this chapter, I think that Serie will probably survive.
If she does not this would leave a floating plot thread unresolved and it is uncharacteristic of Kanehito Yamada to leave anything open.
Frieren and Serie have a basic argument about the purpose and uses of magic. Should she not survive the night, how would this open plot thread be tied up? What direction would magic take in this world? What happens to the Continental Magic Association? Frieren is not about to take over that institution. Can we even imagine Frieren behind a desk working on workmen comp claims?
Besides as one of your fans said, her head flying is so graphic as to look like a “pump-fake” and that makes writer’s sense.
Well the arc seems to be moving towards it’s preliminary resolution. If the anime ever gets to this point in the story, probably need a Season 3.

Season 2 should end up covering another 60 chapters that would lead us to everything right before the Shadow Warriors are introduced. There’s no way in hell Frieren is taking over the Continental Magic Association.. I think it has to be Sense or some way to carve out a leadership role for future iterations of the CMA. Whatever Serie does have planned after her death, I’m sure it should end up being a peaceful one between the empire and the CMA
