What Stands Out About This Episode?

After Subaru reveals to Greed the secrets of his authority, Priscilla and Liliana take care of this “GEUSE-loving” MAD WOMAN!

These Characters ADD SOMETHING COMPELLING

For an arc and season that features familiar faces, there is one and another that provide an entirely different dynamic to the feel of the story. Those two characters are Princess Priscilla Barielle and Liliana Masquerade. Re:Zero features many typical archetypes. Within an arc where the MC and all the main supporting characters have already had their respective payoffs from their character arcs, it’s time for some exposition and some new characters.

Priscilla

Priscilla brings a spicy new element to the world of heroes, where her sadism and instigating of some touchy issues open up a dynamic to the story. One of the biggest, low-key parts about her personality is how self-aware she actually is. Emilia can be one of those dense-airhead characters that run on the theme of purity. Priscilla is basically her counterpart. She is super aware of social situations and very keen on what makes men tick.

This is the first episode where we get to see Priscilla at her peak, minus the “sadistic” part. She was composed when she fought Sirius, even when she had every right to become enraged.

That actually leads me to the theme of her entire character as the “Sun Princess.” Her ability to essentially control fire with her Yang Sword is quite fitting. It is like a metaphor for everything she has conquered in her past to get where she is now. Her ability to divert heavy blows to different accessories on her body is perfect as well. It’s like another metaphor for deflecting the pain elsewhere, in which losing articles of clothing plays well into her sex appeal as a character. It’s a perfectly themed character that contrasts well with all the other girl characters in the story.

Liliana Fulfills Her Purpose

Liliana brings another pure-hearted element like Emilia does to the story. She injects nothing but positive vibes into the story. This is a character where there are ZERO arguments to hate her personality. We need more Lilianas in the world, and this episode proves that she is one of those rare positive cultural influences that helps heal the world—truly heartwarming indeed.

Liliana’s purpose for this part of the arc is to bring home what Priscilla and Sirius fought over in their perspectives on “love.” Sirius thinks that love is one where both partners think as one, whereas Priscilla believes love is where partners tolerate the differences between them.

What brought this idea home is the Kiritaka and Liliana relationship. Kiritaka would love to wife her up, but he understands that her talents are a gift to be shared with the world. With Liliana helping heal Wrath’s authority over the NPCs, this displays that exact purpose. And for Kiritaka, if that is who he wants to be with, then that is how it’s going to be for their relationship—a fitting end for Priscilla’s defeat over Sirius.

Overall, this episode gave us Priscilla, the hero, and Liliana, the grounded character—two characters who bring entirely different dynamics to Re:Zero: one of excitement and pleasure, the other heartwarming until the very end.
