What Stands Out About This Episode?

SHONEN STAPLES

Every anime is going to have its unique twists that lead to the same emotional outcomes you’d expect from a shonen-based anime. While this one is described as a “supernatural, romantic comedy,” it’s mainly shonen to the very core, with the romantic comedy mixed in at the same clip as any other shonen. You’ve got your “mentor senseis,” cool otherworldly abilities, and action-packed scenes that are more unique to Dan Da Dan.

As lighthearted and fun as the anime is, this episode sets up endless possibilities where a “main villain” doesn’t necessarily need to hold the plot together—though Horny Turbo Granny is currently acting as one. Those possibilities include aliens dropping in at any moment, trying to steal Ken and Momo’s “banana” like in episode 2. In episode 3, Momo’s granny explains how certain powerful spirits “bound to locations” pose a major supernatural threat, which means we could get endless encounters with similar antagonists like Horny Turbo Granny.

Along with the cool concept with supernatural entities wanting to cause controversial alien “Diddy” abductions, the idea of different powers being utilized in different locations within Japan, pose as a unique way to encounter other cool characters with badass abilities like “Santa Dodoria,” who take advantage of the “God’s powers” based on their location. Overall, this episode did a swell job at bringing together what the world of Dan Da Dan will be like—which can be freaky hot.. and not.

Ayase BABA!

This episode just introduced one of the most hilarious and “enticing” characters depending on what angle you are trying to make out of these curves in Dan Da Dan: Seiko Ayase, Momo’s grandmother. Imagine if Tsunade from Naruto kept her old age, while keeping her other “youthful features.” Here is a character with a body of your typical thick waifu anime character, the personality of your favorite charismatic shonen mentor character that everyone looks up to and what else? Her character is hilariously ironic. She is a spiritual medium that most sane people in the real world know as scammers. Fortunately for these spritual charalatans, they have a hero they can all get behind, as this character is advertised as legitimate.

With the introduction of Momo’s grandmother, we get a whole of ‘badassery’ of intense fight scenes, knowledge that reflects her age, while maintaining youthful curves that is getting everyone ready to lose it all for a BABA! Within the first two episodes, the story explored and teased pretty much the exciting parts of what this story would be about from fighting aliens and ghosts to finding a way to get Ken Takakura’s “manhood” back by removing the horny Turbo Granny’s curse. This episode allowed a cool mentor-like shonen character to explore the exposition of the show from how powers work and how they may end up running into future enemies in the future.

The biggest takeaway from this episode of Dan Da Dan was definitely Momo’s grandmother. Her epic introduction set the tone for what’s to come, bringing along many of the elements that will keep the show both fantastically hilarious and action-packed.

  1. Great review by the Great OTAKU SINH who is even humbled into conservatism by an outrageous Dan Da Dan.

I am very much enjoying the Momo AyaseKen TakakuraĀ Rom-Com romp. Now that is how one does romance, with monsters, ghosts, and aliens, oh and yes, bananas.

But the answer to the great question, “How do you even pee without your wiener?” spoken by a character without a wiener should be obvious.

The ( Momo Ayase x Ken Takakura) ship reminds me of the (Marin Kitagawa x Wakana Gojo) luxury liner. Usually the Gyaru’s are the nerd’s chief bully, but these two gyarus have wonderful personalities and real, gosh-darn-nabit solidly strong values.

Nerds vs Aliens and Gyarus vs Monsters. I’m here for it. Bring on those bananas!
