Video Review

What Stands Out About This Episode?

What was EXCITING?!

In the first 8 episodes, the Wistoria lore was being built and every episode shined a light a various important side characters before entering into the meat of the main plot. This episode was that “meat of the main plot.” I am a “pro-tension” kind of guy and so it’s nice to feel a little sweat watching a dire situation play out and the character’s “true character” reveal themselves.

This episode had both terribly “dire situations” and important character growth moments for a newer character in Wignall, building relatable depth and connecting his character to another very important character in the Magia Vander, “Alf.”

On a side note, villains and brutality go hand and hand. So, if you love gruesomeness to your bad guys, you’re going to love the villains in this one. Although it was brief, it’s nice change of vibes from fighting fellow rivals with a happy ending to a “not-so-happy ending” for some of the NPCs..

Storytelling Gripe—Will Serfort’s “Uselessness”

On the more “annoying” side of the storytelling is being force fed multiple times about the protagonist being “meek” and “useless.” If you guys have been following my Wistoria video reviews for a while now, “MEEK WILL,” has been a running joke since the very first episode to show Will’s portrayal as someone with low confidence and one that has been basically shunned by society as a whole, besides Elfaria, a few close friends, and the dwarves, whom Will aligns with in terms of their similar life struggles.

Up until this point, every little mini arc and episode has basically shown the same arc of Will being useless and weak, only for the end of the episode or end of the little arc to show that Will can quite literally defeat the strongest mages at the Rigarden Magical Academy. Look at Edward Sensei, he even proved that he can land a blow to a “high mage” level talent. In the power scaling of Wistoria, that would mean a step or 2 below that of a Magia Vander, which is the strongest title you can get in the show. So, after about 10 episodes in, the writer wants us to continually relive this “useless Will arc” once again—only to prove AGAIN that he is not.

Although, I understand that Will’s character is now side-by-side in this arc as “wand and sword” and that this episode shows the differences between why the sword can be the downside to the wand’s upside—I just wish they’d throw away that narrative; especially when he already defeated two of their strongest party members in embarrassing fashion.
