Under the Radar Animes (Fall 2023) [Top 5]

What good animes are you missing out on in the Fall of 2023?

Every fall there are tons of new releases of animes—some really big named ones and some that fly under the radar. Here, we are going to discuss a few that might be some hidden gems.

The Kingdoms of Ruin

Revenge! It’s the human wizard Eren Yeager, Adonis, exacting vengeance on his fellow humans as they attempt to eradicate all witches in society due to witches supposedly hindering mankind’s progress. While the premise is kind of ‘meh.’ Who can’t get behind a good revenge story? Chloe, his sensei and caretaker, a witch herself, does her best to protect her human student, Adonis from mankind’s folly against witches. To make it hit really home of how much you want to cheer for Adonis’ revenge, the humans absolutely traumatized him by stripping her in front of the world to see and murdering her in a public execution.

Ten years later, following a decade of the humans confining Adonis to study how he’s able to use magic, he begins his rampage.

Berserk of Gluttony

It’s a fairly simplistic story with characters who are easy to root for. The bad guys are the kind everyone would want to deck in the noggin bully-style. There’s another attractive blonde-haired bishoujou character thrown into the mix, and cool powers with corruptible drawbacks that add a wildcard to the plot. Dispatching monsters, beating up bad guys, and protecting your loved ones.

Yep, it might sound like many other animes out there, but the reason this formula endures is that it still works. The only drawback of this dark fantasy seinen anime is the animation quality, which could be better. If you’re seeking a straightforward, popcorn-like anime to enjoy, this remains a solid option.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

The journey of purpose and finding meaning. That is Frieren. Out of many anime releases this year, this beautiful looking one is near the top. We have an over 1000 year old elf in Frieren, who goes along her journey to understand the meaning of her life, which includes all the relationships she builds in the present as she reflects on her past.

After a 10 year journey to defeat the Demon King with a party of 4, she reflects back on this time to understand what life is really about, regretting how she didn’t try harder to get to know people she’s spent so much time with.

Along her journey as she surpasses the life span of her human companions of 10 years, she ends up taking over as a caretaker of a young girl that her Priest friend companion, Heiter, takes in. This marks one of the first steps in learning how she can find enjoyment in life through meaningful relationships.

If you like great animation, a character driven story and the vibes of a classic Studio Ghibli film. The main character, Frieren, has a special quality about her story that anyone of all ages and genders can relate to.

Tokyo Revengers Season 3 “Tenjiku Arc”

There’s no way Tokyo Revengers can be “under the radar,” right? Not really. But 3 seasons in, maintaining a consistent level of quality of what makes it good in the first place matters. With the development of Takemichi from crybaby loser neet to brave and courageous, I still would love to see him finish as another great shonen character.

With an ever revolving and changing story because of Takemichi’s time traveling, it’s hard to not be enamored with the fantasy of a protagonist constantly changing history.

The Eminence in Shadow Season 2

Does The Eminence in Shadow also fall under the ‘under the radar’ category? Who cares. If you follow me, you know I have a burning passion to not drop the soap when other anime fans sees this anime as “whatever.” I will fight tooth and nail to prove that this is a magnificent anime!

If you enjoy an anime like One Punch Man, this one is on par, if not better. Most importantly, it’s entertaining as hell with fun character dynamics. You’ll be appalled and amused at what you’ll see during some of the fight scenes. To top it off, The Eminence in Shadow has its own brand of humor and its comedic irony is chef’s kiss. Don’t miss out on this y’all!

Last Thoughts

These are a handful of animes that I’ve been checking out for the fall of 2023. Some are clearly better than others. Some are just for fun and simplistic reasons like going to the movie theater to watch another superhero movie. Let me know what you guys are watching for the fall/winter of 2023!
