What Stands Out About This Episode?

A New Plot, New Characters, but Something Feels the Same..

What happens after a big climactic event?! Closure—while cracking open a whole new can of “handsome” that keeps the emotional theme of JEALOUSY alive! Before diving too deep into the flip from pretty, popular, mean-girl side of the jealousy—to the tall, handsome, and “everything-better-than-Okarun” side—we must address the arc’s transition from providing closure to the Alien Boxer-Mantis Shrimp-Kappa-Dover Demon and to cementing Aira Shiratory’s role as a reoccurring supporting character.

A New Ally and then..

A big chunk of this episode is the Alien Boxer/Dover Demon/Kappa/single father/Alien Diddy victim’s new role as one of the Ayase crew’s new ally. After Ken explains why the Serpoians don’t go straight to the source of the power—which is derived directly from the different spirits and yokais—the world of Dan Da Dan gets just a little bit more worldly with the reintroduction of the Alien Boxer that gave Momo, Ken and Aira fits in the previous episode.

Unlike Acrobatic Silky’s backstory, the Alien Boxer’s backstory was in the vein of being a more lighthearted, heartwarming variety. As the Alien Boxer’s purpose in the story is to provide a relatable element to an otherwise otherworldly character.

Another Relationship Payoff and then..

After Ken got caught body heat-to-body heat with another popular attractive girl, it felt relieving and rewarding to see resolution between Momo and Ken. Miscommunication, being at the wrong place at the wrong time, and in bad context? It is classic piafall in relationships.. Ken, just a “pinch” more assertive, is slowly manifesting more and more of those shonen qualities we all know and love—but he’s still just one step behind. With Momo practically ready for Ken to take advantage of her submissiveness, Ken is still just “Okarun Shonen..” With Ken’s hesitance to be direct about his feelings for Momo, that may soon change as one of the most anticipated characters in the Dan Da Dan story, finally shows up: Enoji Jin, a.k.a. “Jiji!”

Before all the Jiji takes start flying, it’s clear as day as to what he will bring to the story and how significant his introduction was to be the devastating cliffhanger of the episode. With Ken getting all the love from multiple suitors, it’s time for Momo’s other suitor and her first love—start to take root again and challenge Ken to become more manlier than ever.

Overall, it was nice to see Aira show her redeeming side and it’s nice to introduce more and more allies that expand across the galaxies far-far away. But if we are being honest, we are here MOST to see the battle of JEALOUSY!

  1. Cool review. Well I was certainly wrong about the gig-workers, Nessie and the Alien Boxer are true aliens, picked up on other worlds by the Serpoians.

And watching my girl, Aira stand tall and clear Momo of all wrong doing, was superb. It is really great seeing characters redeem themselves.

But as you say, we are now here sunk in the sea of green eyed jealousy. Let’s see the player charts. Aira loves Okarun, Okarun loves Momo, Momo loves? Jiji, Jiji loves Aira. Now that is a perfect roundelay. The Triangle is now a Quad. Unless Momo just plans to use Jiji to force Okarun to man up (even if he is still incomplete in the man department).

In watching Dan Da Dan, I have realized one thing, the imagination of the artists involved is far greater than my ability to foresee where this story is going. But I’m here for the ride.

  2. I just caught up with the manga. There are some crazy and wild things that happen plotwise that are very unpredictable. Romantically, it’s heavily centered around how much they can stretch the “jealousy” aspect of the story without hating the characters. And how much they tease us with the payoff of “confessions.”
