What Stands Out?

Aqua and Akane’s Relationship CARRIES MORE WEIGHT!

In the fandom of Oshi no Ko, there is clearly and a purposeful divide from the writer for the choice of waifu for the main character, Aqua. In season 1, Kana provided the perfect cap to the season, along with the first live performance of the new B-Komachi, consisting of the “oldie” Mem-cho, Aqua’s twin sister, Ruby and to give the audience a good wink into who Aqua may really be infatuated with in Kana Arima.

Kana Arima..

In a realistic sense, Kana displays all the normal characteristics that a majority of readers or watchers of Oshi no Ko may want in their own lives. HOWEVER, this isn’t real life. This is fantasy and the enjoyment of what makes for the most interesting plot. So, it only makes sense that I stand firm with the “pro-Aqua & Akane” ship. Akane’s character is the glue that connects Aqua to his “revenge plot,” while maintaining this “realistic possibility” that Aqua and Akane may actually end up together.

While Arima has been ignorant with the fact that Aqua has been plotting this revenge the entire time to kill his father and find out the truth behind how Ai died, Akane knows Aqua’s motivations, which makes the plot and their relationship meaningful in a fantastically dark way. It leaves room for the relationship to go in a route where it can end up in darkness or one where Akane could be the one to save Aqua in the end from himself, like how Aqua saved Akane from “YEETING” herself. That makes the Akane and Aqua relationship so much more intriguing that Kana can’t really bring right now.

Tying themes Back to Ai Hoshino

I also love the fact that everything that has happened in this story thus far, can be traced back in episode 1, through Ai Hoshino’s entire experience as an entertainer. A big motif in the show is about “doing something fake, with the hopes that it will actually be real one day.” In Ai’s case, when she says that she loves the fans, she never genuinely felt that way, but wanted to eventually feel that way. Along with her dying last words, she never wanted to say that she loved her children unless she meant it and by the end, she was able to sincerely say that she loved by Aqua and Ruby. That draws parallel to Akane and Aqua’s relationship as in Akane’s case, the hope is that their relationship that started off “fraudulent,” might actually turn into a genuinely real romantic relationship.

Overall, this episode took one massive leap forward for the next plot as it is revealed that Ruby’s father is indeed still alive. And that the darkness lurking, waiting to be revealed in the at the genesis of the story in Miyazaki, is one that will drastically reveal some more significant revelations and take us one step closer to understanding what led up to Ai’s death.
